I’m Still Here” is a 2024 Brazilian political biographical drama directed by Walter Salles, based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s 2015 memoir of the same name.
The film portrays the true story of Eunice Paiva and her family’s ordeal during Brazil’s military dictatorship in the early 1970s.

In 1970, former congressman Rubens Paiva returns to Rio de Janeiro after six years of self-exile following the 1964 Brazilian coup d’état. Living with his wife, Eunice, and their five children, Rubens resumes his civil career while discreetly supporting expatriates. Amid escalating political tensions, a military raid on their home leads to Rubens’ arrest and subsequent disappearance in January 1971. Eunice’s relentless search for her husband results in her own arrest and torture, while their teenage daughter, Eliana, is briefly imprisoned. Despite these hardships, Eunice continues to seek justice and truth about Rubens’ fate.
The narrative spans decades, highlighting Eunice’s transformation into a human rights activist. In 1996, she receives an official death certificate for Rubens from the now-democratic Brazilian state. By 2014, Eunice, aged 85 and battling Alzheimer’s disease, witnesses the National Truth Commission addressing her husband’s case, momentarily rekindling her memories of the past.
The film stars Fernanda Torres as the younger Eunice Paiva and Fernanda Montenegro as the elder Eunice. It has garnered critical acclaim for its powerful performances and poignant storytelling, winning the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.”I’m Still Here” serves as a poignant exploration of personal loss, resilience, and the enduring quest for justice amidst political oppression.
