House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon is set approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series delves into the history of House Targaryen, the dragonlord dynasty that once ruled the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. It primarily focuses on the internal conflicts and power struggles within the family, leading to a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

The story begins during the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen, a well-meaning but indecisive ruler. As Viserys faces the question of succession, tensions arise when he names his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, as his heir, defying the traditional preference for male rulers. This decision sparks controversy, especially when Viserys later remarries and has a son, Prince Aegon II, with his new queen, Alicent Hightower.

The court becomes divided into two factions:

The “Greens”, who support Aegon II’s claim to the throne, led by Alicent Hightower and her powerful allies.

The “Blacks”, who remain loyal to Rhaenyra as the rightful heir, supported by her own faction, including her husband, Prince Daemon Targaryen.
As alliances are forged and betrayals unfold, the conflict escalates into a brutal civil war. The Dance of the Dragons not only pits family members against each other but also leads to devastating battles, dragon-on-dragon combat, and the eventual decline of House Targaryen’s power.The series explores themes of ambition, loyalty, betrayal, and the consequences of war, showcasing the complex and often tragic legacy of the Targaryen dynasty.
