Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) is the sequel to the hit Disney animated film Wreck-It Ralph (2012), and it continues the story of the lovable bad guy Ralph and his best friend, Vanellope von Schweetz. Directed by Rich Moore, Phil Johnston, and John C. Reilly (who also voices Ralph), this film takes our characters beyond the confines of the arcade and into the expansive, often chaotic world of the Internet.
1. Plot Overview
The story of Ralph Breaks the Internet picks up six years after the events of Wreck-It Ralph. Ralph and Vanellope, now best friends, have settled into their new lives in the arcade, and everything seems fine — until the arcade gets an upgrade. The newly installed Wi-Fi router connects the arcade to the Internet, opening up a whole new world of possibilities.
Vanellope’s New Adventure: When Vanellope’s arcade game, Sugar Rush, breaks down and gets unplugged, Vanellope and Ralph venture into the Internet to find a replacement part for the game. They discover that finding the part will require them to enter the realm of online auctions, gaming, and social media.
The Internet’s Wild World: The Internet is portrayed as a vast, colorful metropolis filled with websites, search engines, social media, apps, and online marketplaces. Ralph and Vanellope encounter many new characters and have to navigate a world they don’t fully understand.
Vanellope’s Desire for Something More: While Ralph is content with their familiar life, Vanellope finds herself drawn to the wild, exciting world of the Internet, particularly a new racing game called Slaughter Race. She befriends the game’s fierce and cool character, Shank (voiced by Gal Gadot), and contemplates leaving Sugar Rush to live in this new world. Ralph, feeling threatened by the possibility of Vanellope’s departure, struggles with his jealousy and fears of losing his friend.
The Conflict: Ralph’s attempts to keep Vanellope in Sugar Rush lead to a series of mishaps and the development of a malware virus that threatens the entire Internet. Ralph must confront his insecurities and work with Vanellope to stop the virus and save the world they’ve come to love.
